Abstract
Play-based learning has gained extensive popularity as an effective pedagogical approach to early childhood education. This study takes into account the impact of play-based learning on the cognitive development of preschool children. Cognitive development, as processes of knowledge and understanding acquisition through cognition, experience, and sensory stimulation, is a key aspect of early childhood. Drawing on a critical review of the literature and empirical studies, the study brings out the strengths of play in the development of cognitive abilities such as memory, problem-solving, language acquisition, and attentional abilities. Furthermore, the study takes into account the educators’ roles, play centers, and the learning environment in supporting cognitive development. The findings bring out the usefulness of play as a natural and inherent aspect of children’s development with extensive implications for educators and policymakers seeking to improve practice in early childhood education.
