Abstract
The impact of parental involvement in early childhood education has been the focus of extensive research, especially its impact on all aspects of child development. Early literacy skills, for instance, are critical to a child’s academic success at school, and research shows that active parental involvement can significantly enhance these skills. This paper explores the role of parental involvement in the development of early literacy, including its strengths, weaknesses, and best practices. Drawing on a comprehensive literature review and a mixed-methods study among parents and early childhood teachers, this study highlights the role of various types of parental involvement—ranging from reading aloud to involvement in school activities—to children’s literacy development. The outcome shows that regular and constructive parental involvement is linked to enhanced reading skills, vocabulary development, and academic achievement during early childhood. The study finally suggests intervention aimed at teachers and policymakers to facilitate increased parental involvement in early literacy programs.
